Hello. I'm Camilla,
I've been writing since the sixth grade, when I started putting my friends into stories and making them read the results. There were about four people in that audience and they were not allowed to leave. I gave them all better hair than they had in real life, and they were kind enough not to mention it.
After that came years of fanfiction — mostly romance, mostly funny, mostly written between midnight and three in the morning because that was the only time the house was quiet. I'm not embarrassed about a single word of it. That's where I learned how a scene breathes, and how much a story can get away with if the people in it feel real.
For a long time I had a career in an entirely different field, and I told myself I'd write a real book someday the way people tell themselves they'll learn the piano. Then someday arrived. The Distance Between Stars is the first thing I've written with characters who belong to me, and the first thing I've ever published. I was terrified to put it out. I did it anyway.
What I'm actually interested in isn't the grand gesture. It's the thing one person notices about another and never says out loud — the hand on the door frame, the cupboard left open, the fact that he knows how you take your coffee and has never once asked. If you've ever reread the same three pages because of how they made you feel, I wrote this for you. I'm one of you.
I write about grown women, complicated men, and the small things people notice about each other and never mention.
